On November 8-12, 2013, according to the collaboration agreement on clinical research between Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and Johns Hopkins University (JHU), JHU first brought its prestigious clinical research training programs to China and carried out investigator and coordinator training courses on North Campus of SYSU. The course aims to teach the trainees the knowledge and skills on clinical research so that they would be able to carry out or assist high quality clinical researches. After five-day teaching and learning, the courses were accomplished and the trainees were issued certificates by Daniel E. Ford, Vice Dean for Clinical Investigation of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Early in September, the course recruitment was launched among the clinical staff members of SYSU and its affiliated hospitals. A total of 133 investigator applications and 33 coordinator applications were received. After initial screening, 74 and 33 trainees accessed the one-month online courses. According to their performance in online learning, 32 and 24 official trainees passed the final selection and entered the site courses.

On November 8, the opening ceremony was held before the courses started. Professor Li Mengfeng, Vice President of SYSU; Professor Liang Dan, Director of Office of Medical Science; Professor He Mingguang, Deputy Director of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center; Professor Weng Jianping, Vice President of The Third Affiliated Hospital; Professor Zhang Li from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center; as well as Professor Adrian Dobs, Professor David Friedman, Professor Pete Miller and Associate Professor Frances Stillman from JHU, attended the ceremony. Vice President Li Mengfeng emphasized SYSU’s support for this collaboration and expressed his appreciation to the JHU trainers and expectation for the SYSU trainees.

The main content of the courses included clinical study design, statistical methods and medical ethics and etc. It was different from previous training because the curriculum contained group discussion and display section. The trainees had chance to exchange with JHU experts. At the end of the investigator course, one student in each group had to report the abstract and discussion results to the experts with a formal presentation, while the trainees received a lot of benefits and improved their original research plans.

In the coordinator course, the current working situations of research coordinators from SYSU and JHU were shown by the trainees and JHU experts. It was a better way to let the trainees know the responsibilities of a coordinator so that they could recognize the gap and identify the development direction.

Meanwhile, the investigator course lectures were live broadcast so that more SYSU students and clinicians were able to study the course.

For the first time, JHU took their excellent faculty to China and held the clinical research training programs in SYSU. The courses were in accordance with the ones in JHU in content and teaching style. At the same time, SYSU provided student management and teaching services for the courses. Based on this successful step, SYSU and JHU will continually develop the collaboration program and gradually build it into a brand course on clinical research.
