Recently, at the opening ceremony of the 38th ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM-ICPC) World Finals held in Yekaterinburg of Russia, Professor Guo Songshan won the ACM-ICPC Senior Coach Award, in recognition of his leading the team of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) into the ACM-ICPC World Finals with a total of 15 years.

Since participating in the ACM-ICPC Asia Regional Contests in 1997, SYSU team has entered the world finals 15 times in the 17-year period, and also achieved excellent results of 2 silvers and 3 bronzes in the world finals. In the 36th ACM-ICPC World Finals held in Warsaw in 2012, SYSU team got the sixth place, creating the best record in the history of its participation in the competition. In mainland China, the number of SYSU participating in ACM-ICPC World Finals is only second to Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Tsinghua University, ranked third.
Senior Coach Award is granted to the coach that has brought teams into the World Finals of ACM-ICPC for 15 years or more. Since 1970, the year ACM-ICPC was founded, only eight professors have received this award worldwide, and in China, Professor Guo Songshan is the second winner of this award.
